Elwood’s series of Case Studies was seen most successfully in Case Study House #18, otherwise known as Fields House. It introduced many design enhancements on previous models. | |||
One of the most significant progressions was the pre-building of the frame in the factory and combining this with already pre-made fixtures such as walls, floors and tiling. It helped to produce a ready-made construction designed by the client that also looked stylish and modern. | |||
Beverly Hills was chosen as the location of the very first construction of the Case Study House #18. It provided sweeping views of the surrounding hills from a prime location. | |||
Elwood kept it very simple with a rectangular design that divided the house in separate sections. The 3 bedrooms (1 master bedroom), the lounge room and a music room were all placed on 1 side of the house. The other side had a fully equipped kitchen with breakfast and dining areas and an entrance hall and covered entryway. | |||
The front of the house that looked out to the street and parking area was protected by translucent glass. This enabled light to come through but provided some privacy for the people inside. Another feature that was standard were the sliding doors in the living spaces of the house that had an outlook to the terrace and a pool for entertaining guests or the family. | |||
The house had many inclusions such as a swimming pool, modern appliances and a central vacuum system. There were a lot of electricity outlets placed around the house for convenience and owners could tailor this house to their own needs. This often made the original design unrecognisable. | |||
It was important for Elwood to show the raw features of this design and not try and hide these existing elements. This was highlighted in the exposed steel frame and obvious large wall panels that signified his architectural plan. The Case Study House #18 was largely built in the factory and so expressing this concept was an important step in promoting these new and improved design techniques. | |||
